If you are looking for a community of cyclists, Deer Creek Canyon is the place to be! Every weekend hundreds of cyclists flock to this area for the quiet roads and challenging climbs. The main climb from Wadsworth Blvd (best parking spot if driving to this area) to the school house in just over 13 miles. I don’t think you can get a longer climb closer to Denver.
The first five miles are on the main road with an elevation gain of -1% through 4%, making it a decent warm up for the main part of the climb. From miles 6 – 10, the grade continues to be gentle and enjoyable. From 10 – 13, the grind takes place, hitting a high of a 9% grade on a couple switchbacks. The reward for the climb is a cool schoolhouse rest stop. The community around the school stocks it with treats and drinks as well as a port-a-potty and water fill station.
The next section of the ride takes you into Conifer and a ride along a busier road [73] for a few miles. After this stretch it is back to the quiet roads and a fun descent on N (and S) Turkey Creek Road. The final descent takes you down Deer Creek Canyon Road and back to your car.
