[Hike] Three Mile Creek Trail

Three Mile Creek Trail is the perfect place to leaf peep during the glorious Colorado autumn. It is located on the Guanella Pass, the main area for Denverites to go during this time of year! Three Mile Creek Trail is a great alternative to the Abyss Trail up the road if you want to avoid massive crowds and vehicle backups.

I hiked this trail on a beautiful Sunday morning in mid-September. I was lucky to get one of the last parking spots in the tiny lot and headed out! I love new trails and exploring the unknown – unsure of what is around each corner! After a wooded path next to the creek for 2 miles, the sky opens and you are surrounded by beautiful yellow aspen trees! The best “rest” and turn around spot happens around mile four (4) where you’ll find an open area with logs to rest. Do it and spend time soaking up the scenery!

Good to Know

Distance: 9.4 miles out-and-back

Elevation Gain: 2,703 ft

Terrain: Varies along the trail – wide gravel, narrow dirt and some steep rocky sections

Parking: Available at the Three Mile Creek Trailhead (right next to the road with ~15 parking spots)

Fun Fact: If you can swing it, I recommend hiking here and anywhere on the Guanella Pass on a weekday. The traffic is nuts on the weekends during the peak leaf peeping season every autumn!
