The Greenough Lake Trail is located on the southside of Red Lodge Montana along US 212 – very close to Beartooth Pass winter closure mark. It is a 3.5 mile loop around the lake with a fishing pier, picnic area, and campground.
After a morning of horseback riding, we were looking forward to stretching our legs, getting in some steps, and exploring the trails of Red Lodge. The highlight of the hike was being surrounded by the mountains the entire way as well as the “old” rusky truck (which we had to take a photo with!)

Good to Know
Distance: 3.5 miles
Trails: Greenough Lake Campground Rd (+ trail) and Main Fork Rock Crk Rd
Elevation Gain: 284 ft
Terrain: Single track, dirt trail + gravel road
Parking: Available at the Greenough Lake Campground
Facilities: Portal toilet available at the Greenough Lake Campground
Fun Fact: The official “trail” takes you back along the gravel road. We didn’t mind as we could walk 4-across and not worry about tripping over a tree root. If this doesn’t sound appealing to you, simply turn around when you reach the road and retrace your steps.
