On Two Feet

[Hike] Grays and Torreys Peak

Grays and Torreys Peaks are 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado. They are located directly off Interstate 70 on exit xxx near xxx. They are popular “14ers” because they are close to the metro, ability to summit two on a single effort, and rated as class 2 (1 being the easier – 5 being the hardest)

I hiked both on a sunny autumn morning in early October. There was an early snowfall so I had to hike through snow on the top mile of each peak. TIp! The 14er season only lasts two months (mid-July through mid-September) so anything outside of that and snow is a definite possibility.

Although I don’t often hike with earbuds, I sometimes use them during  the second half of a big hike (with no worry of my surroundings) as motivation. I will always remember finishing Remarkable Bright Creatures, one of my favorite books, on this hike!

Good to Know

Distance: 9 miles

Trails: N/A

Elevation Gain: 3,650 ft

Terrain: Single-track; dirt + rocks (plus snow for me)

Parking: Small parking lot (~20-30) vehicles at the trailhead. Additional lot next to the interstate exit

Facilities: Available at the trailhead

Fun Fact: If I did it again, I’d park at the interstate exit lot and hitch a ride to the trailhead. The road, ~ 3 miles, is NOT fun to drive on. Plus, when the small lot fills up, you end up parking along the side of the road…hoping you don’t stick out too far nor fall over the edge. There were enough cars driving up, that I’m confident that I could hitch a ride in the time it took to maneuver up at the trailhead.
