The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest urban refuges in the country. Some of the animals that you can see here include bison, deer, raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, prairie dogs, and coyotes and, best of all, visiting is free!
While this space is known for seeing the animals, it also has 20 miles of easy hiking trails which was my focus during my time here. I drove here after dropping my husband off at the airport and set off to explore the refuge from the main parking lot at the Pat Schroeder Visitor Center. The trails are flat, wide and open making for the perfect experience I was looking for on my Friday morning “recovery” walk. The highlight of this walk was walking around Mary Lake with views of the mountains in the background and people fishing off the dock. What a lovely way to spend part of a morning!

Fun Fact: More of a PSA – stick to parking at the main visitor center to avoid my mistake of trying to park at a small lot off the road as there was a park boundary gate there that Google Maps didn’t show 🙁
