The South Platte River Loop Trail is located in the heart of the Waterton Canyon, Littleton, Colorado. The area is the hub for many outdoor adventures; the Waterton Canyon, Colorado Trail, High Line Canal, and Chatfield State Park!
While most people cross the street and head up Waterton Canyon and/or the Colorado Trail, this trail sticks to the east side and is an “easier” trail to hike. I would definitely recommend this one for out-of-towners who don’t want a lot of elevation gain!
Once again, I love a loop and this one has two distinct experiences; the east side is “forest-like” which takes you through tree covered areas and several small bodies of water. At the turn around point, you’ll join the wide, gravel path with 100% exposure to the sun. I love this variety and hopefully you will as well!

Fun Fact: Consider the wind direction when starting out – go with the wind on the west “open space” section and against the wind on the east “forest-like” section. I did this wrong and was pounded by the wind on the way back to the trailhead!
