Mount Yale is a popular 14,000 foot mountain (14er) in Buena Vista, Colorado! Mount Yale is part of the collegiate peaks in the Rocky Mountains along the Arkansas River. There are eight 14ers that make up this collection; all getting their names from the college or university that first explored them during World War II.
Getting There
One of the best aspects of Mount Yale is its accessibility which is commonly a tricky part of these climbs. First, the trailhead is 20 minutes from downtown Buena Vista on Hwy 24, a paved road. Second, there is a large paved parking lot at the trailhead with a toilet. These factors make this hike very popular!
The Climb
This hike starts out with a bang, a vertical bang over a rocky surface. Get ready for it! The trail whines into the forest for a while before reaching the tree line and beyond. Once there are no trees surrounding you, the trail turns rocky, steep, and narrow.
The Summit
The summit is tough! There is a long stretch of “choose your own way” climbing over boulders to the top! It was scary thinking about one wrong step and the valley below. However, nothing beats arriving at the summit. The 360 degree views are magnificent with each direction showing you a different landscape.
