Steamboat coins itself “Bike Town USA” and with the growing popularity of gravel biking they started promoting the best gravel roads in the area. We decided to conquer the Sleeping Giant while on our weekend getaway in Steamboat.
Good to Know
Distance: 42 mile loop from downtown Steamboat
Elevation Gain: ~2700ft
Surface: All sorts of gravel roads – the first several miles are paved roads and all of sudden you leave the pavement for endless countryside of gravel roads. Most is doable yet the sections in the “Road may be impassable when wet. End of county winter maintenance” are pretty rough.
Parking: Several parking areas on the north end of downtown. We parked at Little Toots Park.
Facilities: Restroom at West Lincoln Park just north of Little Toots Park.
Takeaway: Although challenging and a long ride, the ability to be away from traffic and enjoy nature up close is the reason to love riding on gravel!
