[Gravel Ride] Dirty Chatfield Loop + Waterton Canyon

Combine three of Denver’s best gravel rides into one epic adventure! This route takes you through the stunning Waterton Canyon, along the High Line Canal Trail, and into the heart of Chatfield State Park. Waterton Canyon, where the High Line Canal and Colorado Trail begin, is a gorgeous 6-mile (one way) canyon road perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities. (Check out my previous posts about Waterton Canyon here and here!)

As a local, I’m lucky enough to ride this area frequently, but I’m always looking for new ways to experience its beauty. Thanks to Denver’s mild December in 2024, I was able to tackle this route in the middle of the month and even caught a glimpse of some snow! The gravel stretches from Waterton Canyon into Chatfield State Park, including the Chatfield Dam Trail, were a highlight – and definitely not road bike-friendly. I can’t wait to do this ride again, and you should add it to your list too!
