[Weekend Getaway] Ski Aspen Snowmass

Aspen is an iconic ski resort in downtown Aspen, Colorado with Snowmass ski resort just down the road in Snowmass Village. Add in Buttermilk and Highlands to make up the four ski areas within the Aspen Snowmass lift ticket! We visited in early December to celebrate a milestone birthday when Aspen and Snowmass were the only two areas open. Aspen is located directly downtown – you literally ski into town! It is the only ski resort I’ve visited that is this close to the action of town – definitely a huge perk of Aspen.

Let’s talk skiing. Snowmass is touted as being a family-friendly resort with a kids ski school and lots of green runs covering an expansive terrain. Aspen is tough; you won’t find a green run here and the vertical elevation is steep. I put on skis for the first time in several years and up I went on a Snowmass chairlift! Lucky for me, skiing was like riding a bike, it came back quickly and naturally. The good thing about early season skiing is warmer weather (yay!), but the bad thing about early season skiing is the lack of snow and runs open.  Ultimately I was okay with this on my first skiing trip in several years – best to ease back into the sport!

This trip to Aspen Snowmass took place during the Covid pandemic so we didn’t eat + drink at local establishments as much as we normally would on a weekend getaway. Here is a rundown of our time in Aspen Snowmass.

Day 1: Sunday, December 6th

Day 2: Monday, December 7th

  • Ski day at Aspen
  • Fireside Happy Hour at the W Aspen
  • Stroll around downtown Aspen

Day 3: Tuesday, December 8th

  • Morning ski at Snowmass
  • Afternoon exploration at Ashcroft Ghost Town
  • Hot Tub Happy Hour
  • Salmon birthday dinner at Airbnb

We stayed at an Airbnb in Snowmass Village so we were able to walk to the eating + shopping areas within the village. We are excited to visit again!
